THE SOUTH AFRICAN JOURNAL OF DIABETES &
VASCULAR DISEASE
Editor's Choice: Lipid Management
Globally, deaths due to non-communicable diseases now outnumber
those deaths resulting from all other causes combined. The
impact of NCDs can be prevented through primary healthcare
measures to treat those that have contracted, or are at a high
risk of contracting, such diseases. One of the areas in which
primary care can make a difference is the subject of lipid
management.
It is reported that South African diabetic patients are
undertreated for hypercholesterolaemia, highlighting the need
for intensified treatment.
We have also included a
case study of a type 2 diabetic not achieving lipid targets.
FOR THE PATIENT
Read the education leaflet on taking control of cholesterol
levels.
The controversial issue of dietary approaches for lipid
assessment was debated at the European Society of Cardiology
meeting this past August.
